MindBridge is a proud sponsor of the opening keynote of IIA International 2024
Mike Massimino
Senior Adviser for Space Programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a Columbia University professor
Mike Massimino is known for being an astronaut, the first person to tweet from space, a recurring character on The Big Bang Theory, and a New York Times bestselling author. Having grown up as a working-class kid, his seemingly unreachable dream of becoming an astronaut and flying in space was realized in an unlikely journey driven by determination and commitment and accomplished with hard work and humor. After two missions and four space walks to the Hubble Telescope, Massimino is now a Columbia University professor; the Senior Space Advisor to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; an author; a television host and frequent guest; and a speaker providing a unique perspective on teamwork, innovation, and leadership from a down-to-earth spaceman.
Opening Keynote: Find Another Way Around: Being Resilient and Adaptable in Times of Change
(July 15, 2024 8:15 AM – 9:30 AM EST)
Mike was rejected three times by NASA including a medical disqualification which Mike overcame by teaching his eyes and brain to “see better.” His persistence paid off when he was selected to be an astronaut on his fourth try. Mike stresses that as long as you keep trying, no matter the obstacles, achieving your goal is possible. On the final Space Shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, Mike was tasked with the most complicated spacewalk ever attempted: the in-space repair of a delicate scientific instrument. Mike made a major error during that spacewalk, but the ground control team and the astronauts in space worked together to come up with an innovative solution that saved the day and the mission. Although not every problem has an obvious solution, Mike explains how preparation, innovation and creativity can help us with overcoming unforeseen challenges.
